My Own Story
by Charles Reinert ND, PhD, HTH founder
I wasn’t always a “healer”. In fact, I grew up a red haired, freckled farm
kid, climbing trees, riding horses and driving Dad’s tractor. But science fascinated me, so off I went to study physics, graduating from the University of Minnesota with a PhD in physics (1969), and signing on to teach the subject at SW Minnesota State University in Marshall. I soon discovered that my job was far more than just teaching Maxwell’s Equations and Newton’s laws. The students came with boatloads of personal issues, from family squabbles to serious physical conditions. I became dissatisfied as a traditional physics professor, and convinced that I must do something to make a difference. A series of coincidences was pulling me toward the healing arts.
In the summer of 1996, I met Tom, a South Dakota rancher. Tom was an easy going, friendly guy, curious about the world and what I did for a living. Not long after we’d met, he rolled his pickup on a blacktop north of Phillip. He suffered severe spinal cord bruising, and his next chair had wheels on it. I heard about his accident a few months later, and I asked myself, “Splicing an electrical cable is straightforward. Why should it be so difficult to repair a spinal cord?” (the first coincidence)
Two years later, I attended a psychology conference in LaJolla, and “accidentally” shared a hotel room with Frank L. a tall, likable guy with a southern disposition. I soon learned that Frank was also on the board of directors for one Mietek Wirkus, an internationally famous Polish healer. At Frank’s suggestion, I attended Mietek’s workshop and grew very curious about his “bioenergy” mode of healing. (second coincidence)
In the late summer of that year, I had a call from Jeannie, a former physics student. Jeannie was blind, but with the help of Wallaby, her German Shepherd and other students, she had passed my physics course! Now she was on the phone. “Dr. Reinert, can you help me? I think I’m losing my kidney function!”, as though anyone who knew physics should surely be able to solve a kidney problem! As I worked with Jeannie, teaching her to meditate and practice rudimentary Qigong and the few other modalities I knew in those days, I again became impatient with the state of conventional medicine and why it should be so difficult to restore kidney function. (third coincidence)
Just a year later, my daughter Charly and I were attending a beekeeping short course at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota taught by Dr. Marla S. of the entomology department. We arrived at the auditorium where this was to happen, only to be told by Dr. S. that she was feeling really ill, and could not teach that day, so must delegate her responsibilities to Gary, her assistant. I was disappointed, for I knew Marla to be talented in her field. I left the auditorium to register for the course, and happened to walk by her office. The door was open and and I saw her sitting there, looking like “death warmed over”. Not knowing why, but feeling “led”, I knocked on her door and said to her, “Marla, I would like to try to help you...” She assented, and I asked her to simply sit quietly in her chair, eyes closed. I held my hands, one on either side of her head, for about three minutes, then seemed led to remove them. Marla turned to me at that point, and said, “Thank you, that was WONDERFUL!” Five minutes later, she was back in the classroom, teaching with gusto. I don’t know who was more surprised, my “patient” or me! I’d had NO training in healing at that point, and just “did what I was supposed to do”! (fourth coincidence)
Now, here it is, years later. I’ve taken formal training in Bioenergy, in Qigong, in hypnotherapy, nutrition, energy psychology and Naturopathic medicine, so have a few more pieces of paper to put on the wall, but I’m still just “doing what I’m told to do”. At our little two story clinic in the midst of tiny Tracy, I’m fond of telling my patients that, ”We don’t drive the bus! We get on the bus, we ride on the bus, we get off where we’re told to get off, and we try to do what we’re told to do.” In other words, we follow the guidance of the Divine, as we understand it. Many others--skilled and compassionate souls--have joined me on this bus ride-- people like Master Wu, Sheila, Darlene, Rachel, Erin, Sunny, Diane, Goldie, Katie, Gene, and Dr. Steve and Dr. Joe. Together we’d like to think that we can help you heal from almost any affliction--mental, emotional or physical, that you may have. We are far from being all-powerful, and we can’t solve every problem. That is the province of the Divine. But we understand that if we “do what we’re told to do”, and keep the ego out of the way, almost every patient will live better because they’ve worked with us.
